Cuckoo's Nest
(The cuckoo bird's behaviour is one of laying eggs in the nests of other birds, disrupting their order and leading to confusion and conflict.)
Envision: standing alone sits a bird’s nest crafted from (recycled) barbed wire, a material synonymous with division and conflict - a bleak reality. Around are placed ladders ascending to the rim, offering a view from above. The nest is lined with cats’ fur, the bird’s forever foe, providing a paradoxical sense of warmth, and comfort, igniting an instinctual drive for survival.
The ladders symbolise the journey of understanding, empathy, and connection, inviting viewers to confront the dualities of human experience.
As viewers ascend the ladders and peer into the nest, they are confronted with a stark contrast between the brutality of conflict and the enduring spirit of hope and survival. By making this direct connection, this piece transcends its materiality, and becomes an acute reflection on the universal quest for peace, justice, and human dignity.
The significant meaning behind this artwork strikes a chord with the ongoing strife in a region marked by turmoil (Palestine/Israel). Implicit, yet profound, the nest embodies a poignant metaphor for the plight of communities grappling with oppression and violence. Without overt references, the barbed wire embodies the bleakness of occupation, while the cat hair lining symbolises the courage, endurance and dignity (adaptability) of those navigating adversity.
